Bribery in Maintenance Company Selection Process... Former Gwangju Punghyang Redevelopment Association Chairman Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The former chairman of the Gwangju Pungyang District Redevelopment Maintenance Project Association, who was accused of accepting bribes related to the selection of maintenance companies, has been sentenced to prison.
The Criminal Division 11 of the Gwangju District Court (Chief Judge Ji-seon Jeong) sentenced former Pungyang Redevelopment Association Chairman A and former association promotion committee member B, who were indicted while in custody on charges of bribery under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, to five years in prison each on the 21st. C, who gave money to them, was sentenced to two years and six months in prison, accomplice D to two years in prison, and E to ten months in prison with a two-year probation. The court criticized, "The guilt is heavy for accepting money and goods in relation to redevelopment, where public interest is emphasized." Regarding C and others, the court explained the sentencing reason as "considering that they provided money and goods and tried to intervene in the selection of the construction company, which led to a complaint."

A and others were indicted on charges of receiving 520 million KRW from C and others from 2016 to 2019 in exchange for promising to select them as urban maintenance companies during the redevelopment process. The Pungyang District Redevelopment Project involves 2,995 households and is valued at 847.7 billion KRW, making it the largest construction cost among nationwide maintenance projects that selected contractors last year. This redevelopment project also caused conflicts regarding the selection of the construction company, and all association executives, including A, were dismissed. A new association must be formed to proceed with the project, but it is reported to be at a standstill due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
