Court Imposes Fine on 50s for Distributing Candidates' Autobiographies Free Ahead of General Election
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Jo] A man in his 50s who was indicted for distributing candidates' autobiographies for free ahead of the 21st general election was sentenced to a fine by the court.
On the 20th, according to the legal community, the Changwon District Court Criminal Division 2 (Chief Judge Jeonghyun Lee) sentenced A (54), who was tried for violating the Public Official Election Act, to a fine of 1 million won. The court stated, "Donation acts related to elections can distort voters' rational choices, undermining the fairness and transparency of elections and ultimately shaking the foundation of democracy," but also noted, "Considering that the defendant's actions do not appear to have had a significant impact on the election, among other factors."
Earlier, in December 2019, A purchased 50 copies of the autobiography of a candidate running in a district in Gyeongnam and distributed them for free to firefighters attending the fire station's year-end party or placed them on a table at the entrance of a restaurant for people to take.
