Yeosu City’s ‘Namhaean Scenic Gem Geomundo’ Half-Price Travel... 50% Support for Passenger Ferry Fare
From November This Year to March Next Year, Yeosu~Geomun Port Route... Island Tourism and Regional Economic Revitalization Expected
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] An opportunity has arisen to visit Geomundo, which boasts pristine natural scenery, at half the fare.
Yeosu City announced on the 19th that it will support 50% of the passenger ferry fare for the Yeosu-Geomun route from November this year to March next year for non-residents.
During this period, anyone from outside the area can enjoy a 50% discount on passenger fares and travel to Geomundo, Chodo, and Sonjukdo, which preserve culture, history, and pristine natural landscapes.
However, if using Naro-do Port, the ferry fare will not be supported, so passengers must use the Yeosu Passenger Ferry Terminal.
This project was prepared to reduce the burden of maritime transportation costs to remote island areas and to attract tourists to the islands during the off-season.
Yeosu City confirmed that during the pilot project conducted from November last year to February this year, the number of users from other regions increased by 32% compared to the same period the previous year.
Looking only at November and December last year, before the domestic outbreak of COVID-19, the increase was 46%.
Previously, the city secured a project budget of 120 million won through supplementary budgeting, with Yeosu City covering 40% and the ferry company covering 10% of the 50% support amount.
A city official said, “Despite the adverse effects caused by the spread of COVID-19, the pilot project confirmed the effect of attracting tourists,” adding, “We will strive to welcome guests by strictly adhering to COVID-19 quarantine guidelines to support the depressed island economy.”
Meanwhile, Yeosu citizens can receive a permanent 50% discount on passenger fares for all ferry routes operating in the Yeosu area, including Yeosu-Geomundo, Geumo-do, and Hahwado.
