View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] On the 16th, 47 new confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) were identified in South Korea. This is 63 fewer than the 110 cases reported the previous day, dropping below 50 for the first time in 17 days since the 29th of last month (38 cases). The cumulative number of confirmed cases has surpassed 25,000.
According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters (CDSCH) for COVID-19, as of midnight on this day, there were 41 locally transmitted cases and 6 imported cases. The total number of confirmed cases increased to 25,035.
The cumulative confirmed cases exceeded 25,000 after 270 days since the first patient was reported in the country on January 20th, and it took 45 days to increase by 5,000 cases again after surpassing 20,000 on the 1st of last month.
Among the locally transmitted cases, 17 were in Seoul, 15 in Gyeonggi, and 4 in Incheon, totaling 36 cases in the metropolitan area. Additionally, 2 cases each were reported in Daejeon and Jeonbuk, and 1 case in Chungnam.
Of the 6 imported cases, 3 were detected during quarantine procedures, and the remaining 3 were confirmed in local communities. One was a Korean national and five were foreigners. The countries of origin for the imported cases were the United States and India with 2 cases each, and Nepal and the Czech Republic with 1 case each.
