[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Yeon-ju] On the 12th, Kim Jun-hyung, president of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy, interpreted North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un’s choking up during his speech at the 75th anniversary military parade of the Workers' Party of Korea as "showing a human side where even the highest dignity of North Korea can shed tears."
In an interview with CBS Radio's 'Kim Hyun-jung's News Show' on the same day, President Kim said, "It is a characteristic of Kim Jong-un's leadership that is different from his grandfather and father. Chairman Kim is also sensing the trends among world leaders," adding this interpretation.
Earlier, on the 10th, during his speech at the military parade commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Workers' Party of Korea held in Pyongyang, Chairman Kim repeatedly expressed gratitude to the North Korean people, saying, "The heartfelt confession I want to openly share with our people is just one word: 'Thank you'." During the speech, he choked up and wiped away tears.
Regarding this, President Kim said, "It is also an awareness that the Baekdu bloodline and iron-fist rule alone cannot hold the people together," adding, "Recently, strongmen seem to show strong authoritarianism, but that too is based on 'anger.' On the contrary, there is also an emotional side that soothes the hearts of the people. I think Chairman Kim is riding the global trend of projecting a more approachable emotional image."
He further analyzed, "It could be showing the image of a 'human god' who can shed tears despite being the highest dignity. That is one of the biggest characteristics of Kim Jong-un's leadership." He also interpreted, "There is an awareness that the so-called Baekdu bloodline and iron-fist rule alone cannot hold the people together." President Kim explained that since the 2018 Singapore North Korea-U.S. summit, North Korea seems to have been influenced by the vision of being a 'normal state.'
Regarding North Korea’s unveiling of new strategic weapons such as ICBMs and submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) at the military parade, he evaluated, "It seems to have been very meticulously planned with careful control of the level. If they had launched or tested strategic weapons, the entire situation would have collapsed, but they emphasized conveying that they have sufficient deterrence."
On Chairman Kim’s conciliatory gestures toward South Korea in his speech that day, he said, "It means hoping for the day to join hands with South Korea, but there were no concrete proposals included. Overinterpretation is also problematic. It is not bad, but interpreting it as a gesture for dialogue is an excessive interpretation."
