Uzbek Goryeo Nursing Facility 'Arirang Nursing Home' Receives Rapid Dispatch of Korean Medical Staff... President Moon Also Focuses on Economic Cooperation with Uzbekistan
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] Korean medical personnel have been urgently dispatched to the 'Arirang Nursing Home,' a care facility for ethnic Koreans in Uzbekistan, and are currently active on site. Uzbekistan is also providing full support regarding the 'COVID-19' issues at the Arirang Nursing Home.
Kang Min-seok, spokesperson for the Blue House, stated on the 11th, "On the 9th, the day after President Moon Jae-in's directive, our medical team was urgently dispatched to the Arirang Nursing Home, a care facility for first-generation ethnic Korean elderly living alone in Uzbekistan," adding, "The medical team from the Korea International Health and Medical Foundation and the National Medical Center arrived in Tashkent, the capital, at 2 p.m. on the 9th and are currently active."
Spokesperson Kang said, "On the 6th, President Moon and the President of Uzbekistan had a phone conversation. During that call, both leaders repeatedly emphasized that the two countries have a special strategic partnership," and added, "This support for the ethnic Korean nursing facility symbolizes the relationship between the two countries. Uzbekistan is a key country in our government's New Northern Policy."
Spokesperson Kang also said, "The Deputy Minister of Health in Uzbekistan is directly overseeing patient support at the Arirang Nursing Home. The Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including deputy ministers and other senior officials, frequently communicate with our ambassador to monitor progress and have emphasized that they will spare no government support," adding, "The embassy on site evaluates that unprecedented top-level medical support is being provided."
Currently, two additional severe patients have been classified at the Arirang Nursing Home, making a total of four in critical condition. There are currently 27 ethnic Korean patients.
A letter of consolation from First Lady Kim Jung-sook was also individually delivered to all elderly residents of the nursing home. Spokesperson Kang explained, "The original Korean letter was translated into Russian, and both the Korean original and the Russian translation were copied and individually delivered to the residents."
Spokesperson Kang added, "At the request of the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, our embassy also provided a copy of First Lady Kim Jung-sook's letter of consolation to the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Uzbek Ministry reported that the letter from the First Lady of the Republic of Korea to the elderly residents is very warm and encouraging, and they intend to report this to their superiors."
Meanwhile, Kang explained that Korea and Uzbekistan are also making progress in practical cooperation. He conveyed, "During the presidential phone call on the 6th, President Moon expressed hope that many Korean companies would participate in the construction of a gas combined power plant and renewable energy projects, continuing to create exemplary cases of economic cooperation."
