US Daily New COVID-19 Cases Exceed 57,000... Highest in Two Months
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] The United States recorded over 50,000 new COVID-19 cases, marking the highest daily count in two months.
On the 10th (local time), CNN cited statistics from Johns Hopkins University, reporting that on the previous day, the 9th, the U.S. recorded 57,420 new COVID-19 cases in a single day. This is the highest daily number since August 14, when 64,601 new cases were reported.
With this, the U.S. has seen over 50,000 new COVID-19 cases for three consecutive days.
Experts are raising warnings.
Michael Osterholm, director of the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, criticized Florida’s decision to fully reopen bars and restaurants recently.
Osterholm said, "What they did was open everything as if nothing had happened there," warning, "In 8 to 10 weeks, Florida will become a house on fire."
Florida, which was one of the concentrated outbreak areas last summer, succeeded in reducing new cases through measures such as closing bars. However, on the 25th of last month, it fully reopened bars and restaurants.
Debbie Bux, coordinator of the White House COVID-19 Task Force, noted worrying signs in the northeastern U.S. and urged residents to take measures to curb the spread of COVID-19.
Bux said, "This time, action is needed on a private level, such as in individuals’ homes, rather than in public places."
New York and New Jersey, which were initial hotspots in the U.S. and succeeded in calming the COVID-19 flames, are also showing signs of concern.
