Gwangju City to Conduct Rabies Vaccination from 12th to 30th
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 6th that it will conduct the second half rabies vaccination from the 12th to the 30th at 94 designated animal hospitals to prevent rabies.
The vaccination targets are registered companion dogs aged 3 months or older registered under the animal registration system within the jurisdiction. Citizens who wish to get vaccinated can visit a designated animal hospital near their home for the vaccination.
In particular, although the usual vaccination fee is around 20,000 KRW, during this period, the government budget supports material costs worth about 15,000 KRW, so pet owners only need to pay 5,000 KRW per pet for the vaccination.
Gwangju City conducts rabies vaccinations twice a year, in spring and autumn.
For this vaccination, 4,085 doses of rabies vaccine were supplied to the designated animal hospitals.
The designated animal hospitals can be confirmed through the Gwangju City website notices and the 120 call center.
Rabies is a viral infectious disease transmitted to all warm-blooded animals including humans and dogs, and it is a zoonotic disease that can infect humans when bitten by an infected dog or cat.
Every year, cases continue to occur mainly in areas near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) such as Gyeonggi and Gangwon regions where contact with wild animals is frequent, making thorough preventive measures necessary.
Companion dogs must receive a booster vaccination once a year to prevent rabies.
Additionally, dogs aged 2 months or older kept as pets are subject to mandatory registration under animal protection laws. Therefore, if animal registration is not completed, a fine of up to 1,000,000 KRW may be imposed. During the vaccination period, unregistered companion dogs will be encouraged to register and get vaccinated through promotion of the animal registration system.
