Increasing Number of Military Service Evaders Disguised as Mental Illness Patients Every Year
[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] The number of cases caught evading military service through methods such as feigning mental illness or deliberately getting tattoos has steadily increased.
According to data submitted by the Military Manpower Administration to Hwang Hee, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, a total of 342 cases of military service evasion were detected from 2015 to August of this year.
By year, the number of detected evaders was Δ47 in 2015, Δ54 in 2016, Δ59 in 2017, Δ69 in 2018, and Δ75 in 2019. This year, as of August 31, there were 38 cases.
Among the evasion methods detected by the Military Manpower Administration's special judicial police over the past five years, the largest proportion was 'intentional weight manipulation' (115 cases). The second was 'feigning mental illness' (68 cases), followed by 'deliberate tattoos' (58 cases).
In fact, Mr. A, who was classified as active duty (Grade 3) in 2018 due to some tattoos on his shoulder, was caught by the Military Manpower Administration after receiving a full-body tattoo for the purpose of military service reduction, despite knowing that additional procedures would lead to prosecution, and was classified as supplementary service (Grade 4).
Mr. B, who was classified as Grade 4 in 2017 due to mental illnesses such as depression, was caught after persistent tracking by the Military Manpower Administration revealed that he had obtained a false medical certificate. There was also a case where someone was caught attempting to evade service by falsely claiming symptoms such as "seeing ghosts and hearing voices."
