On the 17th, a book concert and Reading Golden Bell will be held... Pre-events such as a one-month-long book report contest will also take place
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Guro-gu (Mayor Lee Seong) is hosting a ‘Book Festival’.
Guro-gu announced on the 6th, “To celebrate the autumn season of reading, we have prepared a ‘Book Festival’ to provide residents with various opportunities to enjoy books.”
Now in its 8th year, the ‘Book Festival’ was started by Guro-gu in 2013 to promote a reading culture. This year, to prevent the spread of COVID-19, it will be held as a non-face-to-face online festival. The slogan is set as ‘Reading Guro! Dreaming Residents!’ to express the hope that dreams and hopes will unfold through books.
The festival begins on the 17th at 1:30 PM with an online ‘Book Concert.’ Author Lee Byeong-ryul, who wrote the essay collection ‘Honjaga Honjayege’ (Alone to Oneself), will talk about the joy of reading. The lecture will be broadcast on the YouTube channel ‘Guro Book Festival.’
At 2 PM, the opening ceremony will take place. Mayor Lee Seong’s opening declaration and congratulatory video will be aired.
Following this, the reading quiz competition ‘Family Reading Golden Bell’ will be held. Elementary students and their parents form teams to read five selected books and solve related questions in a survival format. A total of 40 teams will participate via a video conferencing program, and anyone can watch through YouTube. Six teams with excellent results will receive medals and book gift certificates.
Various pre-events were also held ahead of the main festival.
To encourage residents’ interest in libraries, the ‘Library Expedition’ runs until the 10th. Participants must visit at least three of the 15 public libraries in the area and complete non-face-to-face smart certification and missions. Any Guro-gu resident or member of the Guro-gu Integrated Library ‘Jihye-ui Deungdae’ (Lighthouse of Wisdom) can participate using the ‘Guro-gu Smart Tourism Map’ website. Participants who complete the missions will be entered into a prize draw for cultural gift certificates.
The ‘Family Book Report Contest,’ where two or more family members read the same book and submit a book report, was also held. Works submitted from August 26 to the 24th of last month were judged and will be awarded on the day of the festival. Winning works will be decided by combining evaluations from the Guro Literary Association and online voting results.
A ‘Reading Photo Contest’ was held throughout September. Photos capturing everyday reading moments or library support slogans were eligible. Ten excellent works will be selected through comment voting on the Lighthouse of Wisdom homepage, which continues until the 8th.
The festival concludes with a closing ceremony. Awards will be presented for the Family Reading Golden Bell, Family Book Report Contest, and Reading Photo Contest, along with a prize draw for Library Expedition participants.
On the day of the event, 100 residents who watch the Book Festival via YouTube will be selected to receive prizes.
