DDoS Attack on Financial Companies During Chuseok Holiday... Financial Supervisory Service "Defended Without Damage"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kangwook Cho] During the Chuseok holiday period, there were attempts of DDoS attacks targeting some financial companies. However, it was revealed that appropriate defense measures were taken according to response procedures, resulting in no damage.
The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) announced on the 4th that it held a "Financial Situation Review Meeting" chaired by Senior Deputy Governor Geun-ik Kim, attended by executives in charge of financial markets and related department heads, to comprehensively review overseas financial market trends during the Chuseok holiday and the impact of the domestic market reopening, and to discuss countermeasures.
At the meeting, an inspection was conducted regarding the DDoS attack attempts targeting some financial companies during the holiday period. The FSS explained that financial companies, telecommunications firms, the FSS, the Financial Services Commission, and the Financial Security Institute cooperated to promptly respond immediately after the attacks occurred, resulting in no service interruptions or financial damages.
Additionally, the FSS stated that it plans to actively respond by maintaining an information-sharing system with related organizations and strengthening monitoring to prepare for any further DDoS attacks.
Senior Deputy Governor Kim mentioned at the meeting that from October onward, there is a need to be cautious as financial market volatility may increase depending on variables related to the U.S. presidential election such as President Trump's recovery, and the resurgence of COVID-19 and strengthened lockdowns in Europe.
He also urged, "In particular, please closely monitor market conditions in preparation for the possibility that overseas market variables occurring during the holiday period may be reflected when the domestic financial market reopens on Monday, and if signs of increased instability appear, strengthen preparedness through close cooperation with related agencies."
