Before the COVID-19 outbreak, there were attempts to imagine this. It is said that the teaching effect has been quite significant in actual practice.
Dongmyung University (President Jeong Hong-seop) Creativity and Character Research Institute (Director Yoon Jeong-jin, Professor of Early Childhood Education) has introduced social media as a new teaching method in the untact era and is utilizing it in classes.
With the advent of the untact era due to COVID-19, using social media in class operation enables interactive communication, which is a limitation of non-face-to-face methods. It has the great advantage of encouraging class participation beyond time and space.
The university’s Creativity and Character Research Institute has been developing various teaching methods and content using media since 2014 under the research project “Development of 4C's Creative and Character Convergence Educational Content for Future Education in the 4th Industrial Revolution Era.”
Professor Jeong Su-jeong of this university has been conducting the liberal arts course “Social Media and Creative Character Education” since the first semester of 2019.
The class uses media such as news and documentaries to expose students to a wide range of topics and perspectives, encouraging discussions and participation in various activities.
Students also share their thoughts on SNS platforms like Instagram. They not only encounter diverse topics but also share multifaceted perspectives with other students. Through the class, flexible and creative thinking can be shared in daily life and within their major fields.
Dr. Lim Hong-nam, a full-time researcher at Dongmyung University Creativity and Character Research Institute, said, “This class is a pioneering model of teaching that communicates with students and draws active participation in the untact era.”
