"Even Amid the COVID Situation, We Have to Work"... People Who Forgot the Holiday
56.8% of Office Workers and Part-timers Work During Holidays
'Because Companies and Stores Are Open as Usual' Is the Main Reason
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] Baek Mo (29), a job seeker, decided not to go down to his hometown of Ulsan this Chuseok and stay in Seoul. Due to concerns about the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) and a tight budget, he plans to work part-time at a cafe. He said, "There is a campaign urging people not to go down to their hometowns if possible, so I plan to visit my parents later," adding, "It's disappointing not to see the people I want to see, but it's okay because I can earn living expenses by working part-time."
This Chuseok holiday, it was found that one out of two part-time workers and office workers work without taking a break. According to a survey on 'Chuseok holiday work status' conducted on 3,271 part-time workers and office workers by the employment portal JobKorea and the part-time portal Albamon on the 2nd, 56.8% of respondents said they work during the Chuseok holiday. Among part-time workers, 62.9% responded that they work during the holiday, which is about 18 percentage points higher than the 44.5% work rate of office workers.
In particular, the work rate was high among workers engaged in the service sector. For office workers, the highest percentage working during the Chuseok holiday was in service jobs at 58.2%, followed by public relations and marketing jobs at 48.5%. Among part-time workers, store management was 71.8%, followed by service at 69%.
The main reasons these workers work during the Chuseok holiday were 'because companies and stores operate normally during Chuseok (71.2%, multiple responses allowed),' 'because it is difficult to return home or visit relatives due to COVID-19 (22.6%),' and 'to earn additional income (22.6%).'
