First COVID-19 Death Reported in Greek Refugee Camp
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyemin] The first death from the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) has occurred in a refugee camp in Greece, where migrants from Africa and the Middle East reside, raising alarms over quarantine measures.
According to major foreign media on the 28th, Greek health authorities announced on the night of the 27th (local time) that a 61-year-old male from Afghanistan living in the Malakasa refugee camp north of Athens died while receiving treatment for COVID-19.
About 3,000 migrants are currently staying at the Malakasa refugee camp. Since seven confirmed cases were reported on the 7th, the entire facility has been under lockdown.
The number of residents in Greek refugee camps is currently estimated to be at least 110,000. After confirmed COVID-19 cases emerged, the Greek government has controlled access to several refugee camps.
