Police 'Criticized' for Releasing Wanted Person After False Identity Statement in Front of Them
Victim "Angry at the Arrogant Attitude of the Police"
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Bong-ju] Controversy has arisen after it was revealed that the police released a wanted criminal who assaulted another driver following a dispute while driving under the influence right before their eyes.
According to the Seosan Police Station in Chungnam on the 22nd, around 3 a.m. on the 12th, a fight broke out between vehicles meeting on a narrow road near Hosu Park in Seosan City.
According to the police, B, a man in his 20s who unilaterally assaulted the other driver, A, was intoxicated at the time, and part of A’s parked vehicle was damaged during the assault.
A waited for the police to contact him to address the damaged car but did not receive any response regarding the progress of the case. Later, during a phone call with the detective in charge, he was told that "B had used a false identity and left the scene."
Upon further inquiry, A confirmed that B was already wanted for another crime.
However, B had already gone into hiding and was unreachable. The police are now belatedly tracking B down.
Angered by the police’s handling of the situation, A filed a public petition stating, "I want to hear the response from the Seosan Police Station that released a wanted criminal."
In the petition, A said, "The police did not even know that B was a wanted criminal until I revealed it, nor did they try to find out. I am furious at the police’s arrogant attitude and have been losing sleep every night."
