[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Korea Midland Power is set to actively promote the 'Unused Water Resource Reuse Project' to find solutions to water scarcity issues and alleviate regional droughts. This includes the existing reuse of treated wastewater and a rainwater reuse project that collects and reuses rainwater within power plant sites.

On the 21st, Midland Power announced that for the rainwater reuse project, it will utilize rainwater collected from the newly constructed 170,000㎡ indoor coal yard at the Boryeong Power Headquarters and 190,000㎡ within the Shin Boryeong Power Headquarters site to reuse up to 310,000 tons of previously discarded rainwater annually as industrial water.

Once completed, this project?the first of its kind by a power generation company?will enable the reuse of a total of 3.96 million tons of unused water resources annually. This amount is sufficient for 36,000 people to use for one year.

The total project cost amounts to 32 billion KRW, including 2.1 billion KRW for the rainwater reuse project and 29.9 billion KRW for the treated wastewater reuse project (a nationally funded project with Korea Midland Power bearing 4 billion KRW).

Basic and detailed designs for the entire facility have been completed, and preliminary preparations for construction starting at the end of this year are underway.

Upon completion in April 2023, industrial water for power generation will be supplied in earnest.

Installation work will begin next month. The Shin Boryeong Power Headquarters plans to start construction early next year and complete it before the summer monsoon season, while the Boryeong Power Headquarters aims to complete the indoor coal yard by the end of 2024.

The treated wastewater reuse project plans to use 3.65 million tons annually of treated and purified wastewater discharged from Boryeong, based on the 'Implementation Agreement on Supply of Boryeong Treated Wastewater (Reuse)' signed in June 2017.

Park Hyung-gu, President of Korea Midland Power, stated, "This unused water resource reuse project, the first of its kind by a power generation company, is expected to play a significant role in responding to the water shortage crisis. We will continue to develop various reuse projects and efforts to save water, actively participate in overcoming drought, and strive to return water resources to the local community."
