BMW Motorrad launches cruiser bike 'New R 18'... "300 units pre-ordered"

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] BMW Motorrad, the motorcycle division of BMW, has launched the cruiser bike 'New R 18' in Korea, featuring the most powerful boxer engine in its history. The New R 18 is a newly introduced cruiser bike inspired by the BMW R 5 released in 1936, blending classic design with the latest technology.
BMW Motorrad held the launch event for the 'New R 18' on the 18th at the BMW Motorrad Bundang showroom in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. Lee Sang-hoon, director of BMW Motorrad, said, "As motorcycles become part of everyday life, they are gaining attention as a new leisure culture," adding, "In Korea, about 300 pre-orders have already been made, receiving a better response than in Japan, one of the major markets."
The New R 18 offers the dynamic yet emotional riding experience unique to BMW motorcycles through its air-cooled boxer engine, a tradition since BMW Motorrad's inception in 1923. The R 18’s 1802cc air-cooled engine delivers a maximum output of 91 horsepower and a peak torque of 158Nm (16.1 kg·m). The maximum torque is produced at 3000rpm, but it also delivers 95% of the peak torque in the 2000-4000rpm range.
The body is made of metal, adding a classic charm. The frame, composed of a double-loop steel tube and an open drive shaft, inherits BMW Motorrad’s traditional design.
Especially, the New R 18 First Edition, offered exclusively for the 2021 model, emphasizes its classic design by painting the fuel tank with white double pinstripes. Additionally, the limited edition highlights its uniqueness with chrome parts, a seat badge, and a ‘First Edition’ chrome badge on the side cover.
The suspension excludes electronic control systems to convey a classic feel. It provides stable steering and excellent ride comfort through a direct-connection center suspension strut combined with a telescopic fork and stroke-adaptive damper, as well as preload-adjustable springs.
Latest motorcycle technologies are also applied. Three riding modes?Rock, Roll, and Rain?are provided as standard, allowing customized settings according to riding conditions. It is also equipped with Automatic Stability Control to help maintain stable traction during starts and acceleration, and MSR to prevent wheel lock-up caused by excessive engine braking. Reverse Assist, which enables easy backward movement, is also standard.
The New R 18 was designed from the early development stage for easy customization. The rear frame and painted parts can be easily detached, and the handlebars can be replaced with higher or lower ones with ease.

In Korea, two models are available: the New R 18 Premium and the New R 18 First Edition. The prices are 31 million KRW and 33.7 million KRW, respectively.
