In Gijang-gun, the belief of the county governor that "masks are the vaccine" and "free distribution is equivalent to vaccination" has spread widely like a hypnotic suggestion until the COVID-19 vaccine was developed.
On the 10th, Gijang-gun conducted the 4th free distribution of 10 masks per person to all 172,000 residents, and from the 14th, it has been providing an additional 10 masks per person to special employment workers in the area, and from the 16th, to employees of educational institutions in the area.
The special employment workers include 1,428 people such as post office delivery workers, courier drivers, individual taxi drivers, corporate taxi drivers, village bus and Gijang-gun bus drivers.
They receive 10 masks per person free of charge, totaling 14,280 masks. This is the third support following 9,650 masks on March 5 and 10,950 masks on April 8.
Employees of educational institutions in the area include all 4,679 workers, including staff of 244 institutions such as daycare centers, kindergartens, and elementary, middle, and high schools, receiving a total of 46,790 masks at 10 masks per person.
This is the second support following the distribution of 43,730 masks (10 masks per person) to 4,373 workers at 249 childcare and educational institutions on March 5.
Along with masks, Gijang-gun also distributes hand sanitizers and self-produced "Core COVID-19 Response Quarantine Guidelines" leaflets to raise awareness about COVID-19 and strengthen daily quarantine measures.
On this day, Gijang-gun County Governor Oh Gyu-seok even invoked the British thinker Thomas More, famous for the depiction of feudal society 500 years ago in "Utopia."
Quoting the famous phrase, "Nothing is more important than the safety and life of the people over the dignity of the state," he said, "There is no value more precious than the safety and life of residents. Protecting the safety and life of residents is the foremost responsibility of a local government head."
Governor Oh emphasized, "Following the entire population, we are providing additional masks so that special employment workers and educational institution employees can wear masks at all times and proactively respond to the risk of COVID-19 infection."
Gijang-gun began free distribution of 15 masks per household and one bottle of hand sanitizer per household to all households in the area in February, the first in the nation.
