According to Wando Maritime Police on the 15th, with the upcoming Chuseok holiday, they anticipate an increase in crimes infringing on people's livelihoods and acts undermining maritime safety. They plan to deploy dedicated police officers to seafood distribution markets and vulnerable ports and harbors, and strengthen maritime patrols to carry out intensive crackdowns.
The main targets of the crackdown are illegal fishing (such as Spanish mackerel pole-and-line fishing and shrimp trap nets), unreported changes of crew members, illegal distribution, mislabeling and origin fraud of seafood aimed at price differences, human rights violations of crew members and advance payment fraud, intrusion and theft in village fishing grounds and vessels, etc.
On the 14th, Wando Maritime Police cracked down on five people, including Mr. A (55 years old, male), who sailed without reporting changes in crew members on fishing vessels, violating the Vessel Safety Operation Act.
Earlier, on the 18th of last month, they cracked down on a management vessel that illegally harvested seafood (Spanish mackerel pole-and-line fishing) using an unapproved aquaculture management vessel in unauthorized waters.
Wando Maritime Police stated that such illegal acts make it difficult to identify personnel and conduct searches in case of accidents, so they plan to strengthen crackdowns for the safety of the public.
