Announcement of 2050 Carbon Neutrality Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategy... Focus on 7 Key Areas Including Buildings, Transportation, and Energy for Realizing 2050 Carbon Neutral Green Cities
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dobong-gu (Mayor Dongjin Lee) is promoting the ‘Dobong Green New Deal,’ investing 140.8 billion KRW (including 36.4 billion KRW from the district budget) by 2022 to create 1,064 jobs.
To this end, on the 10th, the district announced the ‘2050 Dobong-gu Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategy,’ aiming to reduce 1,342,000 tons of greenhouse gases (based on 2005 emissions) by 2050 and realize a carbon-neutral green city.
The ‘2050 Dobong-gu Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategy’ focuses on seven key strategies: green buildings, green mobility, green energy, green waste, green forests, green life, and green education. It aims to simultaneously address economic and climate crises and create ‘Dobong, a sustainable green city where people and nature coexist happily.’
In particular, the strategy proactively reduces emissions from buildings (69.5%), transportation (27.6%), and waste (2.3%), which together account for approximately 99.4% of Dobong-gu’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Additionally, the district plans to expand urban forests to absorb emitted greenhouse gases, accelerate the transition to new and renewable energy, encourage residents to practice energy saving in daily life, and continuously provide education to promote these efforts through simultaneous and multifaceted strategies.
‘Green Building’ will dramatically increase the power self-sufficiency rate starting with the district office building. The current power self-sufficiency rate of 1.3% will be raised to 50% by installing 1.5MW of renewable energy and remodeling to maximize insulation performance.
Furthermore, for aging public buildings, the district will focus on ‘green remodeling’ to raise energy efficiency to the level of Zero Energy Buildings (ZEB) by linking with national and city subsidy projects.
‘Green Mobility’ will lead the introduction of electric and hydrogen vehicles in the public sector to drive expansion in the private sector. From 2025, all official vehicles will be 100% electric or hydrogen vehicles, and the private sector will aim to increase the current electric and hydrogen vehicle adoption rate of only 0.3% of registered vehicles to 100% by 2050.
‘Green Energy’ aims to achieve a 60% power self-sufficiency rate in Dobong-gu by distributing 300MW of new and renewable energy such as solar power. Initially, 50MW of solar power will be supplied to the public sector and 200MW to the private sector, while expanding renewable energy distribution by 50MW using public land for fuel cells, geothermal, and small wind power.
‘Green Cycle’ will reduce household waste generation to half of the 2018 level by establishing a resource recovery center, promoting a Dobong free of single-use products, and working with Seoul City to achieve zero direct landfill of household waste.
‘Green Forest’ will create 1,492,000㎡ (4.5㎡ per person) of forests such as wind path forests and ecological forests to absorb and offset emitted greenhouse gases and strengthen the role of parks as safe green resting places.
‘Green Life’ encourages the practice of ‘reducing 4 tons of greenhouse gases per person,’ and green education will train 30,000 greenhouse gas reduction facilitators to promote this effort.
