[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A pastor couple from Jeju, who concealed their visit to a hot spring during an epidemiological investigation despite testing positive for the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), has been discharged from the hospital. Jeju Province plans to file criminal charges against the pastor couple for violating the 'Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Act.'
On the 14th, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced that confirmed patients No. 29, 33, 43, 44, and 48 in Jeju, who had been receiving isolation treatment at Jeju National University Hospital, were discharged around 2:30 p.m. that day.
Jeju patient No. 29 was classified as a contact of patient No. 252 in Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, where a small-scale COVID-19 cluster occurred at Saebit Church, and underwent diagnostic testing, confirming positive on the 24th. Jeju patient No. 33 is the wife of patient No. 29 and tested positive on the 25th of last month.
After being diagnosed with COVID-19, the couple concealed their movements during the epidemiological investigation, citing "no symptoms." However, the health authorities' mobile phone location tracking revealed that the couple visited Sanbangsan Carbonated Hot Spring located in Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo City, Jeju, at around 2:40 p.m. on the 23rd of last month.
As a result of testing related to their visit to 'Sanbangsan Carbonated Hot Spring,' eight COVID-19 confirmed cases were identified nationwide. Notably, one of the eight visited government offices including Jeju Provincial Government, leading to over 640 public officials undergoing group diagnostic testing.
Jeju Province plans to apply a zero-tolerance policy against obstructing COVID-19 prevention by hiding movements or providing false statements and will file charges against the couple for violating the 'Infectious Disease Control Act.'
