Global Smartphone Shipments Down 26% Year-on-Year
Huawei Ranks 1st, Samsung 2nd... Samsung Tops Middle East, Europe, and South America
Domestic Market Down 8% Year-on-Year, Up 9% Quarter-on-Quarter
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Global smartphone shipments recorded 276 million units, a 26% decrease compared to the same period last year. This is the largest year-on-year decline ever. All regions, including India and China, experienced a year-on-year decrease.
According to market research firm Counterpoint Research on the 11th, the market share by manufacturer in the second quarter was ▲Huawei 20% ▲Samsung Electronics 20% ▲Apple 11% ▲Xiaomi 10% ▲Oppo 9%, in that order.
Samsung Electronics maintained first place in Europe, the Middle East, and South America but was narrowly overtaken by Huawei, placing second overall. Huawei ranked first in Asia, including China, while Apple took first place in North America.
Counterpoint explained, "Huawei's smartphone shipments decreased by 3 percentage points year-on-year, but increased by 11 percentage points in China," adding, "Apple maintained steady shipments despite the impact of COVID-19, increasing by 2 percentage points compared to the same period last year."
The proportion of 5G smartphones in the second quarter grew significantly to 12%, up from 7% in the previous quarter. China accounts for 80% of total 5G smartphone shipments.
The domestic smartphone market is recovering... thanks to the performance of mid-to-low-end phones
Domestic smartphone sales in the second quarter of this year increased by 9% compared to the first quarter, showing signs of recovery. However, sales decreased by 8% compared to last year.
Counterpoint stated that domestic smartphone sales returned to growth in the second quarter. This was due to recovering demand centered on mid-to-low-end smartphones and the release of new products from Samsung Electronics and Apple.
Market share by manufacturer was ▲Samsung Electronics 67% ▲Apple 19% ▲LG Electronics 13%. By model, the iPhone SE ranked first, followed by the Galaxy S20 Plus and S20 in second and third place, respectively.
