The New York Times (NYT) and others reported on the 7th that China is not renewing press credentials for some American journalists.
The Foreign Correspondents' Club of China stated in a press release that the press credentials of five journalists from at least four media outlets, including CNN and The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), have not been renewed.
The Foreign Correspondents' Club expressed concern that more journalists will soon face the same situation.
Journalists whose credentials have not been renewed have been notified that they can work temporarily with expired press credentials.
The Foreign Correspondents' Club explained that since this temporary permission can be revoked at any time, journalists are working under the threat of expulsion.
Foreign journalists in China must have press credentials to operate and obtain residence permits.
This situation arose amid conflicts between the United States and China over issues such as COVID-19 and trade negotiations.
