Kakao Opens 'No.1 Data Center' in Ansan, Gyeonggi... 400 Billion Won Invested
Construction of Data Center and Industry-Academia Cooperation Facility at Hanyang University ERICA Campus
[Asia Economy Reporter Buaeri] Kakao announced on the 7th that it will establish a data center in partnership with Hanyang University. This is the first time Kakao is establishing a data center.
On the same day, Kakao signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the construction of the Kakao Data Center and Industry-Academic Cooperation Facility together with Ansan City and Hanyang University ERICA Campus at Gyeonggi Provincial Government.
The data center is an integrated management facility that provides servers, networks, storage, and network devices, serving as core infrastructure for collecting and operating data.
Kakao will invest 400 billion KRW to build a data center and industry-academic cooperation facility on a 18,383㎡ site within the Hanyang University Campus Innovation Park in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province. Architectural design will be completed in the second half of this year, followed by administrative procedures such as building permits, aiming for completion in 2023. Kakao Pay Securities will participate in the financial advisory for the data center.
The Kakao data center will be hyper-scale (a super-large data center capable of operating over 100,000 servers). The data center’s computer building can house a total of 120,000 servers, with a storage capacity reaching 6EB (exabytes).
Kakao plans to build an eco-friendly data center that saves energy by utilizing cutting-edge technology. To consider not only economic efficiency but also safety, it plans to actively invest in the initial mechanical systems.
The system will monitor water usage carefully in proportion to electricity consumption and minimize water usage by collecting and utilizing rainwater. Additionally, various devices such as chillers and precision air conditioners will be installed to reduce electricity consumption.
Ansan, where Kakao is establishing the data center, has contributed to future industrial growth as a specialized hub for ICT convergence parts and materials after the Ministry of Science and ICT designated Ansan Science Valley (ASV) as a small but strong research and development special zone last year. Furthermore, Hanyang University ERICA Campus is planning to become a hub for regional innovative growth by promoting the creation of a small-scale advanced industrial complex including the Kakao data center within the Campus Innovation Park site.
Kakao will continue steady collaboration with Ansan City and Hanyang University to foster future growth industries and promote regional coexistence in Ansan through this data center construction. The goal is to establish advanced infrastructure centered on AI, big data, the 4th industrial revolution, and cloud business.
