People Power Party: "Recommending North Korean Human Rights Foundation Executives Comes Before the Unconstitutional Corruption Investigation Office"
“Government Hesitant to Establish Foundation, Cautious of North Korea”
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] On the 7th, members of the People Power Party belonging to the National Assembly Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee stated regarding the formation of the North Korean Human Rights Foundation, "Rather than appointing the candidate recommendation committee member for the head of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), which is currently undergoing a constitutional review at the Constitutional Court, we should first proceed with the appointment of executives of the North Korean Human Rights Foundation under the North Korean Human Rights Act, which has already been enacted and is in effect."
They held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Office that morning and said, "Even though four years have passed since the law was enacted, the practical implementation agency has not been established, and the North Korean Human Rights Act is currently not functioning properly. So far, the People Power Party has recommended executives twice, but the Democratic Party of Korea has not submitted a list, so the foundation has never been formed," they said.
They pointed out, "The Ministry of Unification sent a related official document to the National Assembly Secretariat at the end of the 20th National Assembly on March 20 this year, but it was discarded due to the expiration of the term. Since the start of the 21st National Assembly, three months have passed, and no related official document has been sent yet," adding, "While actively providing in-kind support, seemingly mindful of the North Korean regime, they are passive about establishing a foundation for North Korean human rights."
