[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] The Gwangju Metropolitan Council (Chairman Kim Yong-jip) announced on the 2nd that it has formed a special committee to explore measures to reduce greenhouse gases in response to the climate crisis and in overall urban management.
On the same day, at the 1st plenary session of the 292nd extraordinary meeting, the resolution to form the "Green New Deal Special Committee for Climate Crisis Response and Greenhouse Gas Reduction" (abbreviated as Green New Deal Special Committee) was passed.
The Green New Deal Special Committee consists of a total of nine members: Kim Gwang-ran, Park Mi-jung, Shin Su-jeong, Lee Kyung-ho, Lee Jeong-hwan, Lee Hong-il, Jang Yeon-ju, Jeong Mu-chang, and Jeong Soon-ae.
It was promoted last month to prepare a council-level response plan for the three major strategies and eight core tasks aimed at realizing a "2045 Carbon Neutral Energy Self-Reliant City."
Until the end of August next year, the committee will review matters related to the promotion of the "Gwangju-type AI-Green New Deal Comprehensive Plan" and related agenda items.
In addition, to respond to the climate crisis, the committee plans to carry out activities for developing Green New Deal policies, including establishing cooperative systems with Gwangju City, autonomous districts, district councils, and other city councils, building green governance among the public, private, industrial, academic, and political sectors, and introducing a climate budget system.
Chairman Kim Yong-jip said, "It is necessary to recognize the interrelation of various crises caused by climate change, including the unprecedented infectious disease COVID-19 outbreak this year, the longest rainy season in history, and heatwaves exceeding 35°C, and to respond thoroughly to them. Our Gwangju Metropolitan Council will do its best to prepare related ordinances and systems to raise awareness and practice among all 1.5 million members of the Gwangju community in response to the climate crisis."
