[2020 Women's Lives] Highest Ever Female Ratio Among National Assembly Members and Ministers
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] This year, the proportion of women among members of the National Assembly and ministers reached an all-time high.
According to the "2020 Women's Life in Statistics" report released on the 2nd by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and Statistics Korea, among the total 300 members elected in this year's 21st National Assembly election, 57 were women, marking the largest scale and proportion ever recorded.
The number of female National Assembly members increased by 6, from 51 (17.0%) in 2016 to 57 (19.0%) this year.
Among 253 constituency National Assembly members, 29 (11.5%) were women, and among 47 proportional representation members, 28 (59.6%) were women.
Among 18 ministers of central administrative agencies, 6 (33.3%) were women, an increase of 4 compared to 10 years ago (2, 12.5%).
As of 2018, female candidates for heads of basic local governments numbered 35, accounting for 4.7% of all candidates, a decrease of 1.1 percentage points compared to 2014 (5.8%).
The proportion of female heads of basic local governments slightly decreased from 4.0% in 2014, the highest figure, to 3.5% in 2018.
Last year, the proportion of women among managers in public institutions and private companies with over 500 employees was 19.8%, a slight decrease from the previous year but still showing a continuous upward trend.
The proportion of women among national public officials at grade 4 or higher was 16.2%, an increase of 10.4 percentage points compared to 10 years ago (5.8%).

The proportion of female legal professionals is gradually increasing. By type of legal professional, the proportion of women is 30.5% among judges, 31.0% among prosecutors, and 27.1% among lawyers, which increased by 7.8, 12.5, and 16.6 percentage points respectively compared to 10 years ago.
