'Dynamite' Fireworks... BTS Becomes First Korean Artist to Top Billboard Singles Chart
New Song 'Dynamite' Debuts at No. 1 on Latest 'Hot 100' Chart
"33.9 Million Streams in First Week in US, 300,000 Digital and Physical Sales"
Also Ranks No. 3 on UK Official Chart, Continuing Success
The group BTS became the first Korean artist to top the Billboard main singles chart.
On the 1st (Korean time), Billboard reported that BTS's new song "Dynamite" debuted at number one on the latest "Hot 100" chart. The "Hot 100" is a weekly chart ranking the most popular songs in the United States, based on a combination of streaming performance, digital sales, and radio airplay.
Billboard stated, "The seven-member Korean group dominated the 'Hot 100' with their first English single." This is the first time a Korean artist has reached the top of the "Hot 100." Psy previously held the number two spot for seven consecutive weeks in 2012 with "Gangnam Style," but never reached number one. BTS's previous highest position on the "Hot 100" was number four with the title track "ON" from their fourth studio album released last February. Additionally, "Boy With Luv" reached number eight, and "Fake Love" reached number ten.
BTS has topped the Billboard main album chart, the "Billboard 200," four times. By also achieving number one on the "Hot 100," they have become the first to conquer both major charts. The "Hot 100" is more competitive than the "Billboard 200," which is influenced by fandom size. It is especially difficult for non-English-speaking artists to enter, and it is rare for Asian artists to reach the top, making this achievement particularly significant.
Upon hearing the news of their number one ranking, BTS expressed their gratitude on the fan community Weverse, saying, "We love you, ARMY (BTS fan club)." Their agency, Big Hit Entertainment, also thanked fans via their official Twitter account, saying, "Thank you, ARMY."
"Dynamite" is a digital single released by BTS on the 21st of last month. The genre is upbeat disco pop. It is the first time BTS has sung all the lyrics entirely in English since their debut. The song received a great response immediately after its release, setting various records. Billboard reported, "In its first week, it was streamed 33.9 million times in the U.S. and sold 300,000 digital and physical copies."
The song also ranked third on the UK Official Charts, one of the world's two major pop charts alongside Billboard. On Spotify's "Global Top 50" chart, the world's largest music streaming platform, it debuted at number one, the first for a Korean artist, and remained in the top three for eight consecutive days. BTS also won four awards?'Best Pop,' 'Best K-pop,' 'Best Group,' and 'Best Choreography'?at the MTV Video Music Awards, which were broadcast live on the 30th of last month.
