Gwangju City Selected for IoT and AI-Based New Data Dam Construction Project
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 30th that it has been selected for the government’s first Digital New Deal project, the ‘IoT·AI-based New Data Dam Construction Project,’ implemented by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
The ‘IoT·AI-based New Data Dam Construction Project’ is a government public contest project aimed at accelerating the data economy and ensuring public safety by digitalizing social overhead capital (SOC) based on the Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Gwangju proposed a system that uses optical sensors, a regional strategic industry, to build an abnormal diagnosis and heat detection system for power and communication lines, and to integrate and manage various disaster information in underground spaces on a platform based on AI and digital twins, receiving favorable evaluations from experts.
With this selection, Gwangju will receive 3.25 billion KRW in national funding to establish a smart safety management system in the 4.8 km-long underground joint duct in Sangmu within this year, and collect and verify big data over two years starting next year.
The underground joint duct is a nationally important facility jointly installed and operated underground in the city to improve urban aesthetics and efficiently manage and secure infrastructure such as power, communication, and water supply.
This project will have a consortium of four local small and medium-sized enterprises build a smart safety management system in the underground joint duct, a national infrastructure, by utilizing core 4th industrial technologies such as digital twins, rail robots, and optical sensors.
Through this, real-time video and data will be produced, collected, and analyzed, and real-time anomaly detection and disaster and safety accident prediction systems will be verified through AI learning.
Additionally, intelligent CCTVs and converged sensors that automatically identify fire, worker entry, presence of safety gear, falls, and help requests will be installed for real-time anomaly detection and rapid response within the underground joint duct.

Jung Min-gon, Director of the City’s Citizen Safety Office, said, “By taking the lead in the government’s Digital New Deal project, we have expanded opportunities to participate in related central government projects and secure national funding, laying the foundation for fostering local upstream and downstream industries and enabling local companies to enter new markets. We expect this to greatly help revitalize the local economy and create jobs, which have been struggling due to COVID-19.”
