'Dangsan Station Disturbance Man' Who Assaulted 2 Passengers Demanding Mask Wearing Appears for Detention Hearing
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] A pretrial detention hearing for a man in his 50s accused of assaulting passengers who asked him to wear a mask on the subway was held on the 28th.
Arriving at the Seoul Southern District Court around 10 a.m. that day, Mr. A responded with "I'm sorry" when asked if he had anything to say to the victims. When asked if he was unaware that he had to wear a mask, he replied, "I didn't know." He remained silent regarding whether he admitted to the charges and the reasons for the assault.
Mr. A's detention hearing began at 10:30 a.m., presided over by Chief Judge Park Won-gyu. The decision on whether to detain him is expected to be made that afternoon.
Mr. A is accused of assaulting two passengers who asked him to wear a mask on a train passing near Dangsan Station on Seoul Subway Line 2 around 7:25 a.m. the previous day.
He reportedly struck the victims' faces with the slippers he was wearing, choked them, and threw an umbrella while causing a disturbance, before being arrested by responding police officers.

According to police investigation, Mr. A stated that he became angry at the mask-wearing request and assaulted other passengers.
