Jeonnam Province Launches 'On-Site Response System' to Prevent Red Tide Damage
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province announced on the 28th that it has entered an on-site response system by operating a red tide response situation room to prevent red tide damage.
Recently, with the issuance of a high-temperature warning and the end of the rainy season, a full-scale heatwave has begun, and red tide is expected to occur earlier than last year.
Accordingly, Jeonnam Province conducts daily regular patrols at 60 red tide-prone sea areas and utilizes 101 honorary red tide monitors from 16 coastal cities and counties for frequent patrols.
In addition, in case of a special warning issuance, it plans to actively respond to emergency situations by operating a mobile response team and supporting control activities.
In particular, according to the ‘Red Tide Response On-site Action Manual’ prepared for red tide occurrence, the duties and roles of related organizations are defined to focus administrative power to prevent fisheries damage caused by red tide.
Along with this, Jeollanam-do has supported a budget of 2.7 billion won to cities and counties this year to minimize red tide damage, and since last month, it has operated a red tide preparation period to check the status of control equipment and yellow soil secured for each aquaculture farm.
Furthermore, maintenance has been completed for five marine environment cleanup vessels (125-ton class) to be dispatched immediately upon red tide occurrence, and six temporary cage refuge sites (safe sea areas) covering 69 hectares have been designated.
Also, to quickly disseminate red tide occurrence situations, SNS is used to share patrol results and water temperature information of red tide-prone sea areas by city and county, and provide information such as aquaculture farm management manuals so that fishermen can respond immediately.

Wi Gwanghwan, Director of the Marine Fisheries Bureau of Jeonnam Province, said, “Strengthening patrol activities in red tide-prone sea areas and initial control in case of red tide occurrence require a close response system with fishermen and related organizations,” and added, “We will focus administrative power to minimize damage through joint public-private control activities in case of situation occurrence.”
