Volkswagen Unveils Design of Brand's First Pure Electric SUV ID.4
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Volkswagen unveiled the exterior design of the brand's first pure electric sports utility vehicle (SUV), the ID.4, on the 28th.
The exterior design of the Volkswagen ID.4 captures the powerful energy of an electric vehicle in an organic form and features excellent aerodynamic performance.
With the launch of the ID.4, the Volkswagen brand has secured a pure electric vehicle model in the compact SUV segment, the largest segment in the global market. Sales will be sequentially launched in Europe, China, and the United States.
Klaus Zyciora, Head of Design at Volkswagen Group, who led the design of the ID.4, said, "The ID.4 is a model that shows the evolution of electric vehicle design," adding, "The ID.4 is the SUV embodiment of the ID series’ characteristic seamless aerodynamics."
He continued, "The edges of the body depart from angular shapes to boast smooth curves, and the distinctive headlights and signature light between the two headlights complete the modern exterior of the ID.4."
Volkswagen emphasized that excellent design is completed by perfect functionality, reducing air resistance to extend driving range. The shapes of the body and passenger compartment are designed with curves, giving the impression of being tightly pulled toward the rear, while various detailed elements such as the rear light cluster and large roof spoiler are precisely applied to strongly control airflow.
The ID.4 has an excellent drag coefficient of 0.28, enabling it to travel over 500 km based on WLTP standards. The rear-wheel-drive model will be launched first, with the all-wheel-drive model to be added later. The high-voltage battery is arranged in a sandwich design under the body, optimized to achieve a low center of gravity.
