Seongbuk-gu Cooling Equipment Support for Vulnerable Groups
Support for 1,200 Households with Cooling Devices like Air Conditioners and Cool Mats... Housing Management Support for 22 Heat-Vulnerable Households... Emergency Living Expense Support for 200 Households Due to COVID-19 Spread
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) is promoting the ‘Aja! Cheer Up Seongbuk! Vulnerable Group Support Project’ to ensure the safe living of vulnerable groups who are going through difficult times due to the spread of COVID-19 and strengthened social distancing measures.
The ‘Aja! Cheer Up Seongbuk! Vulnerable Group Support Project’ is a program funded by donations designated by individuals, organizations, and companies to the Seoul Social Welfare Community Chest to help neighbors in Seongbuk-gu struggling due to COVID-19. The Seongbuk-gu Community Security Council received the funds and distributed them to carry out the project.
Since July, when the heat began in earnest, Seongbuk-gu has provided heatwave response items such as 68 dehumidifiers, 295 cool mats, 443 Punggi Inkyun blankets, and 300 fans to housing-vulnerable households (basic livelihood security recipients, elderly living alone, single-parent families, disabled households, etc.). Welfare planners and visiting personnel from the district welfare council visited each household to provide guidance on heatwave safety measures.
In particular, 30 households, including elderly people who have to spend the hot summer indoors due to COVID-19, were selected to receive 30 window-type air conditioners installed with the support of young people from the Seongbuk-gu Elderly Customized Housing Management Project Group to help them have a comfortable summer.
Seongbuk-gu is not only supporting cooling devices but also conducting the Seongbuk-type Emergency Disaster Living Expense Support Project for households struggling with their livelihoods due to COVID-19, as well as housing environment improvement projects for semi-basement and rooftop dwellings that face even more difficulties during the rainy season and heatwaves.

Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, said, “I hope that the support of air conditioners and cooling supplies will help elderly people who have been unable to use senior centers and heat shelters for months to overcome the hot summer. I sincerely thank the many donors who have delivered their hearts and sincerity for the residents of Seongbuk-gu.”
