Istanojo Facing Restructuring Crisis Sends Questionnaire to Ruling Party Leader Candidates
"As the ruling party and the party to which Lee Sang-jik belongs, we must actively work towards a solution"
Members of the Eastar Jet Pilots Union of the Korean Public Service and Transport Workers' Union, affiliated with the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, held a press conference on the 29th at the Southern District Prosecutors' Office in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, to file a complaint against Lee Sang-jik, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, and his family. Considering the ongoing uncertainties surrounding the M&A, they had been weighing the timing, but following the final cancellation of the Stock Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Jeju Air last week, they decided to report to the prosecution on suspicions of illicit succession involving his children and various paper company allegations. The Airport and Aviation Industry Employment Stability Struggle Headquarters, composed of the Eastar Jet Pilots' Union and others, stated, "The Democratic Party is the party to which Lee Sang-jik, the de facto owner of Eastar Jet and a member of the National Assembly, belongs, as well as the ruling party. We urge them to step up to resolve the situation."
Eastar Jet is currently undergoing a resale process after the merger and acquisition (M&A) with Jeju Air fell through. The company has informed the union of a plan to lay off about 70% of all employees by the end of this month to facilitate a smooth acquisition and rehabilitation.
The questionnaire, sent by fax to each candidate's campaign office, included five major inquiries: ▲ Each candidate's position on the Eastar Jet situation ▲ The government's role in resolving the Eastar Jet issue ▲ Position on expanding the application scope of the Industrial Stability Fund ▲ Actions regarding Assemblyman Lee Sang-jik related to the Eastar Jet situation ▲ Measures the party should take.
