On the third day of the Republican National Convention, the 26th (local time), Vice President Pence delivered his acceptance speech for the vice presidential nomination at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, citing President Trump's achievements and appealing for support.
That day, Vice President Pence compared Democratic candidate Joe Biden and explained in detail why President Trump must be re-elected. Throughout, he took a tough stance, disparaging Biden and praising President Trump.
This was in contrast to the previous day's speech by Melania Trump, the president's wife, which took a more emotional approach by expressing sympathy for those suffering from COVID-19.
Vice President Pence referred to Biden's acceptance speech in which he vowed to overcome a dark era, asserting that President Trump's era is great. He then emphasized that Biden disparaged America.
Vice President Pence cited President Trump's assassination of Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander Qasem Soleimani as an example, claiming he is a president who protected America and Americans, saying, "It is a hard truth, but in Biden's America, you will not be safe."
He also repeatedly emphasized that President Trump blocked the entry of Chinese nationals after the COVID-19 outbreak, predicting that Biden would not do the same.
Vice President Pence stressed law and order several times that day. Mentioning law and order, he stated, "The violence occurring in Minneapolis, Portland, and Kenosha must stop." He continued, "We must maintain law and order on the streets for all Americans of every race, religion, and skin color."
This represented President Trump's stance of taking a tough approach to protests against the police killing of Black man George Floyd by asphyxiation and protests against the police shooting of another Black man, Joseph Blake. President Trump also mentioned law and order in a tweet that day, saying he would send the National Guard to Kenosha, where the protests erupted.
Vice President Pence claimed that although President Trump built a great economy during his three years in office, it was hit by the coronavirus from China, and he vowed to secure a COVID-19 vaccine by the end of the year to restore the economy.
Meanwhile, after Vice President Pence's speech ended, President Trump appeared at the event venue. President Trump, along with Melania Trump, took the stage, applauded with Vice President Pence and his wife, and listened to the U.S. national anthem sung by country singer Trace Adkins. The event was designed to highlight that the location of the speech was the inspiration for the lyrics of the U.S. national anthem.
