Hyundai Motor Labor and Management Switch to 'Untact' Negotiations for Wage and Collective Bargaining Amid COVID-19
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Due to concerns over the resurgence of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the wage and collective bargaining agreement (wage and collective agreement) negotiations between Hyundai Motor Company's labor and management will be switched to an 'untact (non-face-to-face)' method this year.
On the 25th, Hyundai Motor's labor and management announced that, as part of social distancing measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the ongoing wage and collective agreement negotiations will be conducted via video conference. This is the first time in history that Hyundai Motor's labor and management will conduct negotiations through video conferencing.
Until last year, Hyundai Motor's labor and management held face-to-face negotiations every year with about 60 negotiation committee members gathering in the meeting room of the Ulsan plant.
Due to the impact of COVID-19, the meetings will be switched to non-face-to-face, and this year discussions will be conducted through video connections dispersed across three bases: the main conference room of the Ulsan plant headquarters, the Ulsan plant Global Production Training Center, and the Namyang Research Center video conference room.
The labor and management had continued face-to-face negotiations at the main building of the Ulsan plant up to the third round of talks held on the 20th, including the opening ceremony on the 13th. The untact negotiations will be applied starting from the fourth round of talks on the 27th.
