Cho Kuk "Lacked 'Critical Reflection' in Family Daily Life," Euphemistically Expressed
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Sung-pil] Former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk stated on the 20th regarding the allegations of family corruption surrounding him, "While immersing myself in academic research and reforming power institutions, I was unable to escape the logic of the 'Competitive Republic' in my family's daily life."
The Competitive Republic is a book by Professor Kang Soo-dol of Korea University, which discusses what catastrophic situations arise when one blindly participates in the competition to live well without deep reflection.
On this day, Cho's remarks were interpreted as a roundabout way of saying that the lack of critical reflection led to incidents such as his children's admission scandals and illegal private equity fund investment allegations.
Cho introduced Professor Kang's new book Competitive Republic on his Facebook, saying, "It well pointed out my 'limit points' that I revealed at last year's press conference and confirmation hearing, making me reflect once again."
In the post, Cho introduced the parts about children's admission scandals and private equity fund allegations mentioned by Professor Kang in the book. Kang wrote in the book, "Cho's family seemed to be aware of the problems and contradictions of the current education system but did not struggle beyond that," and "Rather, they seemed to think it was better to collect as much as possible if it helped in admission evaluations."
Regarding the private equity fund part, Kang wrote, "Cho's family, who lent money to the fund, seemed to think about increasing spare money as long as it did not particularly harm others, rather than critically reflecting on how the current economic system works and acting accordingly." However, Kang also said, "I support the human Cho Kuk."
Cho highlighted these parts of the text with a highlighter pen and wrote, "'Gangnam Leftist' must naturally endure criticism of Gangnam characteristics," and "Thank you for supporting the human Cho Kuk."
Cho has been called a representative Gangnam Leftist. The Gangnam characteristics (the positive image associated with Gangnam) seem to stem from the fact that he is a Seoul National University professor and the child of a 'private school owner.'
