Chinese Ambassador to the US Warns, "The Day of Reckoning Will Come"
Forces Stirring the New Cold War Must Pay the Price
Vietnam and Korean Wars, Painful Costs of the Past Cold War Era
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] Cui Tiankai, China's ambassador to the United States, warned some forces that are fueling a new Cold War, saying "the day of reckoning will come."
According to the website of the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. and the Chinese state-run Global Times on the 20th, Ambassador Cui made these remarks at an online seminar hosted by the Brookings Institution.
Ambassador Cui opened by saying, "There are attempts to deny the historical relationship between the two countries and to drive intentional confrontation and conflict," adding, "Currently, China-U.S. relations are like a falling object."
He continued, "Some people in the U.S. are worsening China-U.S. relations through a strategic confrontation framework," pointing out, "The idea that a new Cold War framework will suppress China's growth and further help replace the Chinese regime is delusional."
Ambassador Cui especially mentioned, "The whole world has paid a painful price for the Cold War over the past 40 years," referring to the Vietnam War and the Korean War. He said, "Although China will face challenges and difficulties due to the deterioration of bilateral relations, those who led the new Cold War will also have to pay the price." He reiterated, "The day of reckoning will come."
Ambassador Cui stated, "China has been striving to overcome difficulties with the U.S. side and build a future-oriented relationship, and has repeatedly expressed China's will for healthy development," adding, "We hope to cooperate with the current U.S. administration and find clues to resolve issues."
