Appointment of Shim Jae-chang as Head of Safety Management at Seoul Metro Corporation
Appointment on August 20? Term is 3 years... Expected Role as the Right Person for Subway Safety Management
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seoul Metro (President Kim Sang-beom) has appointed Shim Jae-chang, the current Director of Safety Planning, as the Executive Director and new Head of the Safety Management Headquarters.
The Head of the Safety Management Headquarters is an executive position responsible for overseeing and coordinating safety, disaster, and health environment-related tasks for the corporation and the subway lines operated by the corporation. In the absence of the president, this position acts as the president's deputy.
The term of the new Head of the Safety Management Headquarters is three years. (August 20, 2020 ? August 19, 2023)
The new Head, Shim Jae-chang, joined Seoul Subway Corporation (the predecessor of Seoul Metro, which later changed its name to Seoul Metro and operates lines 1 to 4) in July 1986. He is a "subway man" who has built his career mainly in electrical-related work.
In 2016, he began full-scale safety management work as the leader of the Safety Investigation Task Force at Seoul Metro's Safety Investigation Department. In 2018, he was appointed Director of the Safety Planning Department, contributing to solving important safety issues of the corporation. Notably, he was the first to arrive at the scene during various railway accidents, leading the staff.
Since June 2020, he has been acting as the Head of the Safety Management Headquarters following the retirement of his predecessor (Choi Jung-gyun, former Head of Safety Management Headquarters).
His efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 have also been highly evaluated. Director Shim led the corporation's COVID-19 Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters as the head of the General Situation Team, holding daily meetings and actively responding to current issues. Thanks to his efforts, the corporation's subway infectious disease response plan was recognized as the top case study by the global subway research organization CoMET (Community of Metros), alongside Hong Kong MRT, achieving excellent results.
