Kim Jeong-jae "Request to Specify Gender Sensitivity in United Party's Rules... Willing to Join Hands with the Ruling Party"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The United Future Party's Special Committee on Sexual Violence plans to request the inclusion of gender sensitivity in the party's constitution and regulations. They also plan to collaborate with the ruling party to establish a special committee on sexual violence at the National Assembly level.
Kim Jeong-jae, chairman of the United Future Party's Special Committee on Sexual Violence, said to reporters after holding the first meeting of the special committee at the National Assembly on the 20th, "Today, we plan to request that provisions enhancing gender sensitivity be explicitly stated in the party's constitution and regulations."
At the first meeting, the special committee announced, "We will enact laws that encompass all sexual crimes by meeting victims of power-based sexual crimes, the nth Room case, stalking, and dating violence."
Regarding this, the meeting reached a consensus to prepare measures to eradicate not only sexual violence but also a wide range of sexual crimes. The committee will be divided into three subcommittees: ▲ power-based sexual crimes ▲ digital sexual crimes ▲ stalking and dating violence, and will prepare related legislation.
Chairman Kim emphasized, "We will strive to have the legislation we prepare adopted as the party's official stance. In particular, regarding power-based sexual crimes, since the ongoing investigation related to the late Mayor Park Won-soon of Seoul is not being properly conducted, we will directly visit the prosecution office, police, and Human Rights Commission to urge investigations."
Regarding the timeline for completing the legislation, he said, "We aim to complete the legislation within two months if possible," adding, "The ultimate goal is for it to pass in the National Assembly, so we plan to propose to the ruling party to establish a special committee at the National Assembly level to ensure its passage."
There was also an opinion that the protection of women's human rights should not be used for partisan purposes. Professor Lee Soo-jung of the Department of Criminal Psychology at Kyonggi University, a member of the special committee, responded to criticism regarding her joining the United Future Party's special committee by saying, "It is very unnatural that the protection of women's human rights becomes an important issue or not depending on political parties. By participating in this special committee, I believe the United Future Party will regard the value of gender sensitivity as very important."
Regarding rumors circulating in pro-government communities about her family, such as "her husband is connected to Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl's line," Professor Lee said, "In 20 years of doing this work, this is the first time my personal information has been exposed." She added, "I was aware that absurd things happen anonymously online, but now that I have become a victim, I understand the victim's feelings even better." She also denied the rumors as untrue.
