[Initial Moment] Knowing When It Is Time to Go
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] Recently, several famous YouTubers have been embroiled in controversy over so-called 'backdoor advertising.' Despite receiving product sponsorships from companies and producing promotional content, they failed to disclose this properly and instead boosted views by claiming it was an honest review from their own purchase, only to be exposed for lying. As criticism poured in, they belatedly posted apology videos and hastily added the missing captions, creating a rather clumsy spectacle.
A line from the famous poet Lee Hyeong-gi’s poem "Nak-hwa (Falling Flowers)" came to mind: "How beautiful is the back view of one who clearly knows when it is time to leave and departs."
In a situation where they should have avoided causing trouble in the first place, shallow remarks hoping to be forgotten quickly?without timely, convincing explanations or sincere reflection?only fuel public anger. Judging by the harsh comments on related news articles, their apologies have not garnered much sympathy.
Many public figures who have enjoyed great success from high positions also step down when involved in scandals. The worst cases are when the misconduct itself is unpleasant, and their resignation statements are insincere, perfunctory apologies or reveal a lack of awareness of their wrongdoing.
Former Busan Mayor Oh Keo-don is such an example. He stated, "During a brief meeting of about five minutes, I made unnecessary physical contact. Regardless of severity, I realized such behavior could be recognized as sexual harassment." While this might seem like a reflection on his actions, the nuance suggests he felt it was a minor matter that could have been overlooked, making the sexual harassment label somewhat unfair. After announcing his resignation, he faced heavy criticism for causing secondary harm to the victim with shameless excuses rather than genuine remorse.
However, the recent uproar over whether Bae Dong-wook, chairman of the Korea Federation of Micro Enterprise Associations (KFMEA), will resign seems even more severe. Despite his members forming an emergency committee and holding press conferences demanding his resignation, Chairman Bae has officially declared he will serve his term until February next year and is resisting stepping down.
Last month on the 25th, KFMEA held an educational and policy workshop in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, inviting a girl group and turning the event into a drinking and dancing party. Criticism arose especially because the event was conducted without adhering to COVID-19 prevention guidelines. Added to this were Chairman Bae’s improper behaviors, such as allowing family members to attend without bearing appropriate costs, awarding contracts to family-run businesses, and opaque use of event funds.
He attempted to explain that the drinking and dancing during the workshop were intended to support the entertainers struggling financially due to COVID-19 and to comfort the hardworking heads of the federation with a 15-minute invited performance. However, regarding the family contract favoritism and event expenses, he offered only vague excuses, claiming ignorance or carelessness.
According to KFMEA insiders, internal conflicts have prolonged to the point that the federation’s core work of protecting micro-enterprise owners’ rights is effectively halted. Besides the controversial workshop and family contract favoritism, Chairman Bae has been reported to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office for embezzlement, breach of trust, violation of the Subsidy Management Act, and forgery of official documents.
Despite the unprecedented floods combined with COVID-19 causing a surge in micro-enterprise closures, the federation cannot provide support services, leaving members in despair. Meanwhile, Chairman Bae dismisses calls for resignation and focuses more on next year’s presidential election, which is extremely frustrating.

The reason why the back view of one who clearly knows when to leave is admired is because it is so difficult to do so. In Chairman Bae’s case, it seems he has already missed the opportunity to gracefully depart with a dignified resignation statement. It is hoped that the conflict will be resolved soon so that KFMEA can devote its efforts to helping micro-enterprises overcome their crisis.
