Targeting 23 Public Wastewater Treatment Facilities

Nakdonggang River Basin Environmental Office Provides Technical Support for Remote Water Quality Monitoring System View original image

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kang Woo-kwon] The Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office announced on the 18th that it will provide technical support to public sewage and wastewater treatment facilities in the region from August to November to enhance the operational management capabilities of the Water Quality Tele Monitoring System (Tele Monitoring System, hereinafter Water Quality TMS).

The technical support will be conducted through on-site visits by a joint technical support team composed of Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office officials and experts from the Korea Environment Corporation.

The support targets 23 public sewage and wastewater treatment facilities (17 public sewage facilities and 6 public wastewater facilities) that experienced difficulties in operating the Water Quality TMS last year.

This technical support will focus on consulting facility managers on actions to be taken, such as the timing of applying the Total Organic Carbon (TOC) standard and the installation of TOC measuring devices, due to the change in organic matter indicators in the effluent water quality standards from Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) to TOC starting January next year.

COD has limitations in measuring total organic matter, including refractory organic substances, and thus was replaced by the TOC indicator for more efficient management of organic matter.

Existing facilities have been subject to the TOC standard since January 2021. New public wastewater treatment facilities have been applying the TOC standard since January this year.

Existing facilities must complete the installation of TOC measuring devices by June 2023 and manage water quality through water analysis until the devices are installed. New facilities must install TOC measuring devices by December this year.

Additionally, the program will provide education on how to respond to issues such as Water Quality TMS device malfunctions and frequently occurring violations, and offer customized technical support addressing difficulties specific to each facility.

Park Chan-yong, Director of Basin Management at the Nakdong River Basin Environmental Office, stated, “Through this technical support, we expect to prevent confusion at the frontline caused by the transition of organic matter indicators and significantly improve the operational capabilities of public sewage and wastewater treatment facility Water Quality TMS managers.”
