[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] On the 18th, Ulsan Superintendent of Education No Ok-hee announced plans to establish a ‘Climate Crisis Response Education Center’ and ‘Ulsan Future Education Hall’ by utilizing closed schools at a meeting themed ‘Green Smart School’ attended by President Moon Jae-in.
Superintendent No attended the Green Smart School promotion meeting held at Changdeok Girls' Middle School in Seoul, hosted by the Ministry of Education, via video. The meeting was attended by superintendents of education from 17 cities and provinces and President Moon Jae-in.
Superintendent No stated that by establishing the Climate Crisis Response Education Center, mainly for middle and high school students, they aim to provide experiential ecological environment education so that students can understand the causes and seriousness of the climate crisis and move toward actions to solve climate crisis issues on their own.
She also announced plans to establish the Ulsan Future Education Hall, mainly for elementary and middle school students, where through cooperative learning processes on climate crisis, inequality, and food issues, students can develop future competencies that consider the values of community and sustainable living.
Superintendent No emphasized, “It is even more meaningful that the Climate Crisis Response Education Center and Ulsan Future Education Hall will be created by utilizing closed schools located by the beautiful East Sea,” and added, “The Ulsan Office of Education will take the lead to do its best so that our children can grow into sustainable society and ecological global citizens.”
The Climate Crisis Response Education Center is scheduled to be established in March 2022 at the Haeoreum Campground in Ganjeolgot, Seosaeng-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan, by utilizing a closed school. The project budget is approximately 5 billion KRW.
The Ulsan Future Education Hall will be created by utilizing the former Gangdong Elementary School in Buk-gu, Ulsan, with the main building housing the future hall and gymnasium. The project budget is 48 billion KRW.
The Green Smart School is a plan to transform nationwide aging schools into advanced schools based on digital and eco-friendly infrastructure, and it is one of the ten representative tasks of the Korean New Deal, the government’s post-COVID-19 initiative.
The government plans to invest 18.5 trillion KRW in national and local funds by 2025 to improve facilities of 2,835 aging school buildings nationwide.
