Samsung and LG Electronics Industries Also on 'Alert' Amid COVID-19 Resurgence
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] As the resurgence of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) becomes evident, domestic electronics companies such as Samsung and LG are also facing emergencies with confirmed cases emerging. Although there is no immediate damage to production or sales, experts point out that thorough prevention and response are necessary to prevent major damage such as production stoppages.
According to related industries on the 17th, a subcontractor employee at Samsung Electronics' semiconductor plant in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do, was confirmed positive for COVID-19 on the 14th.
There was no disruption or damage to production, but Samsung Electronics quickly responded by tracking the confirmed person's movements, disinfecting the area, and placing employees suspected of contact on home quarantine.
Recently, as COVID-19 cases surged mainly in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, Samsung Electronics' COVID-19 Emergency Response Task Force (TF) notified all employees before the start of this holiday to "refrain from going out as much as possible and stay at home."
Additionally, all Samsung affiliates conduct a weekly self-assessment every Sunday, where employees input related symptoms via mobile devices.
Yesterday, a confirmed COVID-19 case was also reported at LG Display's Paju plant in Gyeonggi-do. The employee was classified as a contact of a confirmed case and was tested while under self-quarantine.
According to LG Display, employees classified as close contacts of the confirmed employee also underwent COVID-19 testing and received negative results. Since the confirmed case was identified during self-quarantine, the panel production line is operating normally.
In the case of LG Electronics, since last month, in-house quarantine facilities used by employees returning from overseas business trips are being operated in Pyeongtaek, Gumi, and other locations.
