[Test Drive] The Bigger 'French Sensibility' Compact SUV, 2nd Generation Peugeot 2008
Increased Length and Width by 140mm and 30mm Respectively
Impressive Stable Driving in Heavy Rain
Composite Fuel Efficiency of 17.1 km/L Rated 'Excellent'
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] The ‘Peugeot 2008 SUV’ has returned as a second-generation model after a full change (complete redesign) for the first time in six years. It is a model that first debuted in the domestic market in 2014 and was the best-selling imported compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) the following year.
Given the previous model’s fairly significant achievements, there is considerable interest in the new model as well. However, the situation is not entirely easy. Over the past five years, the domestic compact SUV market has become a focus for both domestic and imported car brands. Even domestic automakers have expanded their lineups to include two or more models in this segment and entered the market. Attention is on whether the ‘All-New Peugeot 2008 SUV’ can assert its presence in an increasingly competitive market. We examined the renewed 2008’s competitiveness through a test drive event held on the 4th.
First, the exterior features designs inspired by a lion motif applied throughout. The front showcases LED daytime running lights (DRL) shaped like a lion’s fangs and a slightly larger grille compared to the previous model, creating a sophisticated yet strong impression. At the rear, LED 3D taillights shaped like lion claws stand out.
With this full redesign, the Peugeot 2008 has earned the new nickname ‘Mini 3008’ due to the significantly reduced gap with the 3008, which is a class above. Compared to its predecessor, the Peugeot 2008’s length has increased by 140 mm and width by 30 mm. With dimensions expanded to 4300 mm in length and 1770 mm in width, it now has a more SUV-like stature. Additionally, the wheelbase has been extended by 65 mm to increase interior space. The rear seats offer ample headroom and legroom, making it comfortable even for adult males. The cargo space has a basic capacity of 434 liters and can be expanded up to 1467 liters by folding down the second-row seats.
Sitting in the driver’s seat, the 3D instrument cluster immediately catches the eye. It overlays two digital clusters to deliver various information in a more three-dimensional manner. The interior design primarily uses curves but actively incorporates straight lines in places to create shapes like rectangles and octagons without appearing clunky. The switches below the center display are toggle-type.
The test drive took place amid heavy rain, yet the vehicle maintained stable driving even on cornering sections. Despite the wet road conditions, the car did not slip and gripped the road firmly. Although the speed was not increased much due to the rain, considering that compact SUVs are mainly used for urban driving, the performance was adequate. The Peugeot 2008 diesel model driven produces a maximum output of 130 horsepower and a peak torque of 30.6 kg·m. Its combined fuel efficiency is an excellent 17.1 km/l.
Safety and convenience features are also well-equipped. Basic features include lane departure prevention assist, active safety brake, and driver attention warning system. The GT Line trim adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, lane centering, and auto high beam assist.

The price remains in the 30 million KRW range. Back in 2015, the previous Peugeot 2008 SUV’s reasonable price in the 30 million KRW range played a key role in it becoming the top-selling imported compact SUV. The All-New Peugeot 2008 SUV is priced at 32.48 million KRW for the Allure trim and 35.45 million KRW for the GT Line. For those looking to purchase an imported compact SUV at an affordable price, the Peugeot 2008 SUV still appears to be an attractive option.
