In Gurye, Jeollanam-do, over 1,300 disaster victims have emerged as houses and livestock barns collapsed due to recent heavy rains. The estimated damage amount exceeds 120 billion KRW. Currently, thousands of local residents, volunteers, and public officials are engaged in restoration work under heatwave conditions exceeding 30 degrees Celsius.
Accordingly, CU deployed a 3.5-ton mobile convenience store at the Gurye 5-day Market flood site on the same day and delivered bottled water, cup noodles, iced coffee, and other items to residents and volunteers involved in restoration efforts. CU’s mobile convenience stores have mainly operated at special events such as local festivals and separated family reunion events, but recently they have taken on the role of disaster relief centers in national disaster situations.
BGF Retail President Lee Geon-jun, who attended the support activities that day, conveyed messages of consolation and encouragement to CU franchisees affected by the damage, on-site employees, and local residents. He inspected the flooded stores and urged for swift restoration.
President Lee said, “I visited the site to offer comfort to the franchisees and disaster victims suffering from unprecedented prolonged rainy season damage and to support the restoration efforts. Going forward, we will continue various efforts to protect community safety by utilizing CU’s differentiated infrastructure and systems.”
The CU stores in the affected area were completely submerged by the recent heavy rain, but the CU crisis response system was activated, and normal operations are expected soon. Additionally, 29 CU stores nationwide affected by the rainy season have also resumed normal operations except for some requiring repairs. The resolution rate for other inconveniences reaches 99%. All CU stores are fully insured under comprehensive property insurance at the company’s expense, allowing compensation within the maximum coverage limit for natural disaster damages.
