[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Cho Young-shin] Jimmy Lai (黎智英), the founder of Apple Daily, a leading anti-China media outlet in Hong Kong, has been released on bail.
Apple Daily reported on the 12th (local time) that Jimmy Lai was released on bail just one day after being arrested by the police on charges of violating the Hong Kong National Security Law (Hong Kong Security Law).
When Jimmy Lai left the police station shortly after midnight, about 100 supporters shouted slogans such as "We will support Apple Daily until the end," Apple Daily reported.
Earlier, the Hong Kong police's National Security Department, a unit dedicated to enforcing the Hong Kong Security Law, arrested Lai at his home in the Ho Man Tin area of Hong Kong on the morning of the 10th on charges of violating the Hong Kong Security Law.
More than 200 Hong Kong police officers raided and searched the Apple Daily headquarters in the Ching Kwan O area in the morning, arresting CEO Cheung Kim-hung and CFO Chow Tat-kwong, among others.

Jimmy Lai is also the founder of the clothing brand Giordano, widely known in Korea. He criticized Premier Li Peng (李鵬), who was the main figure behind the harsh crackdown on the Tiananmen (天安門) protests in 1994, and actively participated in the 2014 Umbrella Movement.
