Haenam-gun Implements Early Warning System Project for Disaster Risk Areas
Use of Real-Time Resident Evacuation at Two Locations Including Bokpyeong District, Haenam-eup
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Hyun] Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Myeong Hyun-gwan) announced on the 7th that it will establish an early warning system to quickly inform and guide evacuation for residents in the event of disasters within the jurisdiction.
With a project cost of 700 million KRW (50% national funding), this project targets two locations designated as natural disaster risk improvement zones: Bokpyeong District in Haenam-eup and Inji Reservoir in Hwawon-myeon. A smart measurement system including rain gauges, displacement meters, water level meters, outdoor wireless broadcasting systems, and disaster situation propagation systems will be installed for real-time use in resident evacuation.
These two areas are disaster risk zones located upstream of villages, where there is a high risk of casualties during the monsoon season and localized heavy rainfall.
The county secured national funding by proposing the project to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety under the 2020 Korean New Deal government policy, as nationwide casualties and property damage have occurred recently in unmaintained disaster risk zones such as steep slopes and reservoirs due to monsoon and localized heavy rainfall. The project is scheduled to be completed in the first half of next year.
