Chosun University to Reduce Second Semester Tuition by 11.5%... Special COVID-19 Scholarships Awarded
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Chosun University will be the first university in the Gwangju and Jeonnam region to provide a ‘COVID-19 Special Scholarship’ to all students.
Chosun University announced on the 6th that it has signed an agreement with the Student Council and will provide all students with 12% of their tuition fees as a ‘COVID-19 Special Scholarship’ for the second semester of the 2020 academic year.
This decision was made after the school carefully considered students’ demands for the guarantee of learning rights as the first semester of the 2020 academic year was conducted mainly through non-face-to-face classes due to the COVID-19 situation.
Chosun University empathized with the burdens faced by students and parents due to difficulties caused by COVID-19 and made this decision after several consultations with the Student Council.
With this COVID-19 Special Scholarship, 11.5% of the tuition fees for the second semester of the 2020 academic year will be waived (11.5% of the self-pay amount, with a cap of 250,000 KRW).
In June and July, Chosun University provided disaster relief funds of 500,000 KRW each to about 800 students who suffered economic damage due to COVID-19 through the ‘Cheongsong Scholarship’ and the ‘COVID-19 Overcome Student Love Scholarship’.
When combined with the previously provided scholarships, the total amount returned to students amounts to 12% of the entire tuition fees. This is the highest rate among universities in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions and is also considered a high level nationwide.
Chosun University raised about 5 billion KRW in scholarship funds through a donation campaign among its members, budget cuts by departments, and partial adjustments to merit scholarships due to COVID-19.
The scholarship recipients are limited to students who consecutively enrolled in both the first and second semesters of the 2020 academic year, while those graduating in August and those on leave of absence will receive half of the scholarship amount separately. The total number of students expected to benefit from this scholarship is about 19,000.
Chosun University and the Student Council have agreed that, in addition to providing scholarships, any future COVID-19 related support projects will prioritize improving the educational environment to enhance students’ learning rights.
President Min Youngdon stated, “We deeply empathize with the difficulties faced by students and parents due to the sudden COVID-19 situation, and through dialogue with students, we decided to reduce tuition fees for the second semester. Although this may not be a result that satisfies everyone, we hope it will help support students’ learning and financial situations even a little. Chosun University will do its best to improve quarantine measures and the learning environment in the second semester as well.”
