Yangcheon-gu and Kim Ga-ne Provide a Warm Meal to 'Out-of-School Youth'
Purpose of Discovering and Managing Unregistered Out-of-School Youth Not Linked to the Center
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Kim Soo-young) has started providing meals to out-of-school youth in the area through the Out-of-School Youth Support Center (Yangcheon-gu Kkumdeulim) from this month.
‘Out-of-school youth’ refers to young people who are not attending school. As of last year, excluding reasons such as illness, studying abroad, and overseas departure, the number of out-of-school youth in Yangcheon-gu was revealed to be about 228.
This is the 5th highest number among Seoul’s autonomous districts. Currently, the Yangcheon-gu Out-of-School Youth Support Center manages about 130 youths through counseling and support programs, and it is estimated that a considerable number of out-of-school youth are not yet connected to the center.
The district has launched a meal support project with a total budget of 10.2 million won, funded by a 1:1:1 ratio of district, city, and national funds, to provide warm meals to out-of-school youth who are not connected to the center, while encouraging them to register at the center to receive various programs and support, including encouragement to take the qualification exam (GED), for continuous management.
Youths who wish to receive meal support can register at the Out-of-School Youth Support Center (Yangcheon-gu Kkumdeulim) and receive meal coupons worth 6,000 won per meal at four franchise stores of Kimga-ne, a global food service franchise company located in the area (Sinjeong Sageori Station Branch, Mokdong Medical Center, Mokdong Central Branch, Yangcheon-gu Office Branch).
The Yangcheon-gu Out-of-School Youth Support Center provides programs such as counseling support, educational support, job experience, and employment independence support for out-of-school youth aged 9 to 24 in accordance with the ‘Act on Support for Out-of-School Youth.’ Out-of-school youth who wish to use these services can apply by calling the Youth Hotline 1388 or searching for Kkumdeulim.
Kim Soo-young, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, stated, “Through this meal support project for out-of-school youth, together with the four franchise owners, we will do our best to ensure that out-of-school youth do not suffer from nutritional imbalance. At the same time, we will promptly identify, manage, and support about 110 out-of-school youth in the area who are not currently registered at the center, so that no youth are left behind.”
